A mosque is a place where Muslims go to worship. The mosque serves two prepossess: first it serves the Muslim a place to come together to pray and second for a center to get information, education as well as to settle a dispute. The mosques first started in the 7th century AD from an open air space to become elaborate domes and prayer halls. The mosque started on the Arabian Peninsula and then it has spread to all the other continents through out the entire world. The Five Pillars of Islam states that Muslims are required to give approximately one-fortieth of their wealth to charity. Since mosques form the center of Muslim communities, they are where Muslims go to both give zakat and, if necessary, collect it. Prior to a holiday, a special zakat is collected that is supposed to assist in helping poor Muslims attend the prayers and celebrations associated with the holiday. Ramadan is Islam's holiest month. During this time Muslims must fast from food. They are to fast food from sunrise to sunset, and are required to pray during the day. One of the roles that mosques play for Islam is for the purification of the soul and strengthening the ties of mutual cooperation among the Muslims.
